Nigeria is the 12th largest crude oil producer in the world (and the largest in Africa), and the 18th largest exporter. Export of petroleum accounts for around 85% of the government's revenue. Oil was only discovered in 1956, and today Port Harcourt is at the forefront of the oil industry in Nigeria. You would think this would make for a fabulously wealthy nation, like Saudi Arabia, but sadly the oil wealth has not trickled down to the average Nigerian and the inhabitants of the Niger Delta are some of the poorest in the country.

Crowd Sourcing

To put things in perspective; Nigeria has over 300 oil blocks, over 200 oilfields, thousands of oil wells, infrastructure and hundreds of Oil & Gas companies involved in producing or servicing. Collecting all this information is a long and difficult process. The information is hard to find and even harder to confirm through independent sources. Understandably most Oil & Gas companies and the government would rather keep the information private for their own personal use.

To counter our data aggregation challenges we're fostering an online community around our initiative and we encourage your participation. Part of our initiative will involve approaching the government at various levels to release specific industry information into the public sector for our developers and analysts to use and come up with interesting research results and visualizations. Open is the keyword here and we're an advocate.
